Domestic violence (also called intimate partner violence (IPV), domestic abuse or relationship abuse) is a pattern of behaviors used by one partner to maintain power and control over another partner in an intimate relationship.

Domestic violence includes behaviors that physically harm, arouse fear, prevent a partner from doing what they wish or force them to behave in ways they do not want. It includes the use of physical and sexual violence, threats and intimidation, emotional abuse and economic deprivation. Many of these different forms of domestic violence/abuse can be occurring at any one time within the same intimate relationship.

24-Hour Crisis Line MWH’s 24-Hour Crisis Line offers immediate intervention and support by trained peers and advocates. Help is available in multiple languages, as well as TDD for the hearing impaired. Emergency Shelter Middle Way House provides shelter for women and children fleeing violence at home. The shelter is a safe place available to families until they have found an appropriate, affordable place to live. Advocacy Women’s Advocates help residents articulate future goals, determine action steps and time lines for their achievement. They meet with women to track progress and make adjustments to the plan. Women’s Advocates provide information and referrals to local community resources and various social service agencies to help residents make informed decisions. Legal Advocacy Our Legal Advocates assist persons over the phone and in person with issues and questions relating to domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking, harassment, child abuse and other crimes. Advocates can describe legal processes and discuss available options. Affordable Transitional Housing The Rise!, which opened its doors in 1998, provides affordable housing for 28 poor and very poor, homeless families headed by women who have experienced life-threatening violence. Transitional Housing is a two-year program. Prevention Education MWH staff members offer Building Healthy Relationships classes in local schools to educate youth and teens about interpersonal and dating violence. Women’s Advocates facilitate workshops on primary prevention to organizations and groups interested in this service.
